About the Tree House Cafe of Michigan City Indiana

Making of the Tree House Cafe - 01

Making of the Tree House Cafe - 02

The seed for the Tree House was planted in November of 2005 when 11 acres were purchased at 3103 East Highway 12, between Michigan City, Indiana and New Buffalo, Michigan. The land had a small abandoned house situated in the center of a piece of property, way overgrown and in desperate need of love. John Allen, Brian Allen and Kevin Coleman came up with the restaurant concept, put together a business plan and the Tree House began to take root. No house can become a home without a lot of love and the "Tree House" is no exception. It has been a labor of love for John, his wife Casey and Brian since opening weekend, Memorial Day 2006.

It was a long process getting the doors open, but there was lots of help along the way. Thanks to local contractors who needed to unload old materials such as windows, doors and siding, we were happy to put it to use. Aside from the fact that there is a tree growing through the middle of the bar, it is named Tree House because it was lovingly created from odds and ends noone else needed. Many people in the community pitched in to help make it grow.

John and Brian Allen grew up in Beverly on the South side of Chicago. They are from a family of 8 children that spent all of their summers in Long Beach from the time they were born. John's wife Casey grew up in Long Beach and is also from a family of 8 children. Each having come from such large families they saw a need for a family restaurant that could handle large groups, maintain that backyard feel and above all be interactive and FUN.

Our menu is casual and focused on quality. We have been in partnership with Bit of Swis bakery out of Stevensville, Michigan since day one. They have provided us with our fabulous pizza dough and bread for all of our mouthwatering sandwiches, delivered fresh daily. Tim Foley is a world renowned artisan baker out of Stevensville, Michigan. His many accolades include Modern Baking Magazine's "2012 Retail Bakery of the Year," USA Today "Top 10 Artisan Bakeries in USA" November, 2007." Brian is the grill master and on the weekends his hand packed burgers, ribeye steak sandwiches, chicken wings and corn on the cob are not to be missed!

The Tree House has gone through many transformations, with John as the visionary and Brian as the artist. Both have put their heart and soul into each personal touch. From the handmade sassafras tables to the enclosure of the bar around the exceptional 180 year old Silver Maple tree, the Tree House has certainly blossomed!

The best part about this journey has been the people we have met along the way. The customers that we look forward to seeing whether it be every day, every weekend or every year, thank you for making Tree House a part of your tradition.
